5 MINUTE GUIDE

Document the loss before details disappear.

A calm, dated record can make conversations clearer throughout a property claim.

01

Protect people and property first

Address immediate safety and take reasonable steps to prevent further damage. Keep emergency-service and mitigation records. Do not discard damaged property unless safety requires it or the carrier directs you to.

02

Create a timeline

Record when the loss was discovered, what happened, who was contacted, what each person said, and what temporary measures were taken.

03

Photograph broadly, then closely

Capture the affected area in context, then individual damage. Save original files and avoid relying only on images sent through text messages.

04

Keep one claim file

Store the policy, claim number, adjuster contacts, estimates, receipts, inventories, letters, emails, and a call log together. The issued policy and circumstances control coverage.
